Rhinoplasty basis

What many of you know in simple terms as a ‘nose job’ is technically termed as rhinoplasty. The term is associated with a type of corrective surgery (or plastic surgery) for imperfections on the nose. While a ‘nose job’ may be too simplified a term for a surgical process it aptly describes the purpose of the surgery. There are many of us born with noses that are not as we might have wanted them to be, in some cases people opt for rhinoplasty in case of a disfigured nose due to some accident or problems too.

Statistics show that an increasing number of American youngsters are opting for rhinoplasty. Popularly called as "nose molding" or "nose forming", it is clear that this surgery is adequate at handling nose jobs not only for beautification but also those which are problematic.

Usually you could opt for rhinoplasty, in case of the following-

  • If you want to beautify your nose
  • For correcting breathing problems
  • To increase or reduce the size of the nose
  • Narrow the span between the nostrils
  • Alter the angle of the nose
  • Change the shape of the nose

In cases when rhinoplasty is done purely for aesthetic reasons, it is referred to as ‘cosmetic rhinoplasty’. In such cases you have to work in close co-ordination with your doctor and brief him very specifically on what your expectations are. Make sure your doctor tell you what the nose will look like post surgery. You must understand that this type of surgery can be conducted on an individual who is at least 14- 15 years of age, or else it might give rise to complications.

Rhinoplasty, is basically of two types, these are, ‘closed rhinoplasty’ and the ‘open technique’, usually your doctor will tell you which is recommended for you. During an "open" rhinoplasty, a small incision is made in the columella, this is done to lift the nasal skin off the tip of the nose through the incision. In the "closed" Rhinoplasty, there are several cuts that are made into the nostrils, extending over to the columella. In the "open" technique the surgeon has a better view of the nasal anatomy, while the advantage of a "closed" rhinoplasty is there are fewer disruptions in the nose.

Since rhinoplasty is a specialized job it is absolutely essential that you choose a surgeon with great care. A good surgeon is one who will understand your needs and counsel you well on the expected results as well as complications and after care that you need to be aware of. Ask your doctor about any queries or worries that you might have regarding the surgical procedure. A good doctor will discuss all details with you  which would include your surgical options, whether the operation will be successful on you, post-operative instructions, recovery time, the technique he will be using, complications of the surgery, any risks, potential danger if any, etc.

Rhinoplasty, is not only a surgical but an aesthetical job and if not done right it might later the shape of your face. The surgeon should create a nose that blends with your facial structure and looks even with your face while improving on your features.
