The use of laser technology for this purpose started off in the 1990s. The light based techniques that is used for this purpose is known as photoepilation or phototricholysis.

In case you want to know how laser hair removal works, here goes.  Melanin, which is responsible for the color of our hair and skin is regarded as the primary chromophore. Two different varieties of melanin appear in our hair. One is known as Pheomelanin which gives the hair a blonde or red color and Eumelanin which makes it either black or brown. It is a misconception that only women go for this treatment, but there are several men who do the same. This treatment is used to remove unwanted hair from different parts of the body like chin, cleavage, chest, underarms, arms, legs, hands, back, lips, shoulders, ear lobe, abdomen, thighs, toes, buttocks, neck, face, and bikini lines.

Laser hair removal has been an accepted mode hair removal procedure since the time it won the approval of the Food and Drug Administration or the FDA. It is popular on account of its fast action and total results.  This treatment works on the principle of selective photothermolysis. The use of the laser light destroys the melanin that is present in the hair follicle and is responsible for its color. However, it is a localized treatment and therefore does not harm the adjoining areas. But the efficient administration of the treatment can make a difference between a job well done and a patch up job, this will of course largely depend, on the laser operator.

Laser Hair Removal depends upon a number of factors. Two of them that are worth mentioning and these include hair color and skin color.  A fair complexion makes the process of hair removal using laser therapy comparatively easier. The results are quickly visible because of lesser pigmentation. The individual who opts for this therapy does not even require spending numerous sessions to achieve the desired results. On the other hand, individuals who have a dark complexion have to wait for some time to get the results.

The second factor that plays an important role is the color of the hair.  The darker the color of the hair the better is the results of laser hair removal.  This is due to the presence of the eumelanin pigment in black or brown hair. However, the pheomelanin pigment present in red or blonde hair prevents the laser from getting absorbed thereby delaying the results.

You need to visit a doctor in order to get a proper advice for laser hair removal. You should also plan your budget well in advance as well as it may require more than one session to complete the process.
